Why My Story Matters

For most of my life, I struggled with weight. I wasn’t just overweight—I was lost. I tried every diet, every workout plan, every ‘magic solution’ that promised results. And every time, I ended up right back where I started… or worse.

By 25, I had given up hope. I told myself I was just meant to be overweight forever. But deep down, I wanted change—I just didn’t know how to make it happen.

The Emotional Toll of Obesity

For years, I was hyper-aware of my size in every situation. Whether I was sitting in a chair that felt too small, walking into a room full of people, or even just standing in a group, I always felt like I took up too much space.

Clothes never fit the way I wanted them to. Shopping was frustrating—I'd grab something off the rack, hoping it would be fine, but deep down, I knew I'd leave disappointed. I was constantly self-conscious about how I looked, how I moved, and how people saw me.

I avoided certain situations—not because I didn't want to be there, but because I didn’t want to deal with the discomfort. Whether it was going to a new gym, eating in front of others, or even just walking up a flight of stairs when people were watching, I always felt exposed. Like my weight was the first thing people noticed about me.

I never openly talked about my weight, because I didn’t want to acknowledge it. If someone brought it up, I’d change the subject as fast as possible. It was like I was constantly trying to ignore what was obvious to everyone else, hoping that if I didn’t say it out loud, it wouldn’t feel real.

December 2013:
The Moment I Gave Up

By the end of 2013, I was done. I had tried and failed so many times that I finally convinced myself there was no point in trying anymore. Maybe I just wasn’t meant to be fit. Maybe some people just stay overweight forever, and I was one of them.

I stopped even pretending to care. I gave up on trying to eat healthy. I drank too much, I ate whatever I wanted, and I told myself that I didn’t care. But the truth was—I did. I just didn’t believe I could actually change.

And then, out of nowhere, I got an email that changed my life.

One Last Attempt:
How I Finally Made It Work

That email was from my local gym, announcing a weight loss challenge starting in the new year. Normally, I would have ignored it. But something about it made me stop.

I told myself I had nothing to lose. One more try. One last time. And if it didn’t work—then fine, I’d accept being overweight for life.
